What is a DDoS attack?

A DDoS attack is a malicious cyberattack that disrupts the normal operation of a targeted computer system, network, or website by overwhelming it with a massive volume of illegitimate traffic from multiple sources. DDoS attacks aim to exhaust the resources (e.g. bandwidth, CPU, memory) of the victim’s infrastructure, causing service degradation or complete downtime for legitimate users. Attackers typically use botnets, networks of compromised computers or devices, to orchestrate and amplify the attack traffic, making it difficult to mitigate and trace the origin of the attack.
