What is a rootkit?

A Rootkit is a type of malicious software (malware) designed to conceal or hide unauthorized access, presence, or activities of cybercriminals or attackers on compromised computer systems or networks. Rootkits typically gain privileged access (root-level or administrative privileges) to the operating system (OS) or firmware by exploiting vulnerabilities or using social engineering tactics, allowing them to install hidden backdoors, steal sensitive information, execute malicious code, and control system functions without detection or removal by security software. Rootkits are often used as stealthy tools for espionage, data theft, botnet recruitment, or remote control of infected devices.
