What is API Versioning?

API Versioning is the practice of managing and maintaining multiple versions of an API concurrently to accommodate changes, updates, enhancements, or backward-incompatible modifications to API functionalities, data schemas, or interfaces while preserving backward compatibility and minimizing disruption to existing clients and applications. API versioning strategies include URL-based versioning, query parameter versioning, header-based versioning, content negotiation, semantic versioning, and version control using version numbers, tags, or aliases to distinguish between different releases or revisions of the API. API versioning facilitates evolution, interoperability, and lifecycle management of APIs across different client implementations and deployment environments.
